Put-In-Bay, Ohio – The National Park Service continues to commemorate the Bicentennial of The Battle of Lake Erie, fought between American and British navies during the War of 1812. This battle was a decisive American victory led by Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry from the safe harbor at South Bass Island on September 10, 1813, which led to a long-lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada.
A series of events will take place at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial now through the anniversary on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. Selected activities of the historic weekend events are below. All events are FREE (fee for access to Memorial Observation Deck). Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Visitor Center and Memorial Column will be open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily. An entrance fee of $3 for those 16 years and older is charged to visit the Memorial’s Observation Deck. Visitors 15 and under are free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Throughout the weekend, programs include on-going historic musket and cannon firing demonstrations, special speakers, and craft demonstrations on the Memorial Grounds.
Saturday, September 7
11 a.m. – Noon
War of 1812 Fashion Show A Regency-Era fashion show features women’s and children’s fashions from the period as well as military uniforms. This event is located at the Niagara Center (71 Concord Avenue Put-in-Bay, Ohio). A free shuttle will be available at the Perry’s Victory Visitor Center starting at 10:30 a.m.
2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.
War of 1812 Grand Parade
A Bicentennial Grand Parade marches through the Village of Put-in-Bay to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Enjoy antique cars, War of 1812 soldiers, marching bands, and more.
5 – 7 p.m.
War of 1812 Military Tattoo
Parks Canada re-enactors join forces with period dress interpreters from the National Park Service to exhibit different military precision drills in the first ever tattoo held on park grounds. The program will include music, color guards, and plenty of musket and cannon firings as a reflection on military tradition and the enduring legacy of international peace between the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.
Sunday, September 8
3 – 5 p.m.
Afternoon of Patriotic Music
Local musicians sing local selections and patriotic favorites in an afternoon concert. Featured artists include
Westside Steve Simmons, Bob Gatewood, Ray Fogg, Pat Dailey, J.D. Owens, and Mike “Mad Dog” Adams.
Tuesday, September 10
9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
Battle of Lake Erie Stamp Release
The official events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie kick off with the National Park Service joining the United States Postal Service for the first day release of a new “Forever” postage stamp paying tribute to the Battle of Lake Erie.
10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Departure for Wreath Laying Ceremony
A wreath is laid at the 1813 battle site. US Brig Niagara and USCG Biscayne Bay transports invited guests. General public can make reservations with The Goodtime (www.goodtimeboat.com) and Jet Express (www.jet-express.com) excursion vessels to participate. A wreath laying ceremony will occur on all four vessels.
2 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
The Battle of Lake Erie Commemorative Procession
The procession features the Put-in-Bay community, the United States Sea Cadet Corps, Parks Canada re-enactors, and Native American representatives.
3 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Commemorative Program
A special ceremonial program honors all the brave men who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie and to commemorate Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over the British on September 10, 1813.
4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Bicentennial Symphony Concert
The Royal Newfoundland Regimental Band and the Toledo Symphony Brass Ensemble present a free concert.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812, and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. The Memorial, a Doric column, rising 352 feet over Lake Erie is situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world.
