The final matches in the 18-team, three-division Seneca / Wyandot / Put-in-Bay / Sandusky / Crawford High School Quiz Bowl League were played at Buckeye Central, New Riegel, and St. Wendelin High Schools on November 3 and Division winners can be named. Calvert’s, Columbian’s, St. Wendelin’s, and Seneca East’s sweep of their matches this outing helped assure them of a ranking at the top of their respective divisions. While Hopewell-Loudon, Mohawk, Ross, and St. Joseph Central Catholic won only two of three of their matches, their wins kept them at the rank they had after the October matches. This year all 18 teams won at least one of their matches, an achievement that doesn’t happen every year.
In the North Division, a 5-point win over Calvert earlier in the season, ranks St. Joseph Central Catholic, 7-2, atop Calvert, also 7-2, in the Division. In third place in the North Division is another Fremont school, Ross High School, with a 5-4 record. For St. Joe’s this is their first year to take home a League trophy. Ross in the North Division and Calvert in the Central were third place winners two years ago.
The winner in the Central Division is St. Wendelin, 8-0, last year’s third place winner in both the Division and in the tournament. Seneca East, 8-1, whose only loss was to St. Wendelin, is in second place. Seneca East had won the South Division a year ago and also was the tournament runner-up. In third place this year is Hopewell-Loudon, 6-3, last year’s tournament champion and Central Division winner.
Columbian’s no-loss record, 9-0, puts the school at the top of the ranking in the South Division. Last year Columbian was second in the Central Division. Mohawk, 7-2, goes home in second place in the Division a second year in a row. Upper Sandusky, 4-5, claims the third spot. Their last trophy, also for third place, was awarded them in 2011-2012.
The top division winners, St. Joe’s, North Division; St. Wendelin, Central Division; and Columbian, South Division, by their wins, have qualified for the Ohio Academic Competition Northwest regionals in April. The top two winners of each of the six regionals across the state in April 2016 will advance to the state championship in Columbus in May.
The next event for the League is the tournament to be held at Heidelberg University December 10.
