Lake Erie Water Level on Roller Coaster Ride

Lake Erie

Changing wind direction and velocity are major players in Lake Erie’s water level.  Measurements are referenced against the Low Water Datum (LWD) certified by the Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data.  Lake Erie’s LWD is 569.2 feet (175.2 meters).  Near real-time and historical data are published by many sources; however, the Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) provides a handy starting point for exploration.  This afternoon’s water level reading from Marblehead Station was 26.1 inches above LWD.  At 6 pm it dropped to just above 24 inches.  Visit the on-line nautical chart to see how water depth changes affect navigation.Lake Erie
