Put-in-Bay School News – by Steve Poe, Superintendent
Once again this year our school will utilize “School Messenger” to inform parents of important announcements, such as school closings or delays. We will now make this available to everyone in our community. If you would like to be notified by text or voice message of school closings or delays, announcements of events, etc., please contact the school at 419-285-3614 to sign up.
In early October the school placed some old tables and file cabinets at the corner of Catawba and Concord for anyone who may have wanted them. The were free of charge, but we would like to know who picked them up for our records. Please contact the school if you know who took possession of these tables and file cabinets.
The senior class would like to offer a special “THANK YOU” to Ms. Joan Rhoad and Cameo Pizza for helping raise over $2,000 on October 6. Joan donated her time and all the ingredients to make nearly 100 pizzas. The money made will help cover the cost of a senior class trip. Also, a big thanks goes out to everyone who ordered a pizza from our senior class!
Now that November is upon us, basketball season is here! Coach Craig Schuffenecker will coach both the Jr. High and High School teams and Ms. Shannon Casserlie will be our cheerleading advisor. Coach Schuffenecker’s teams travel to Mackinac Island on December 2 and 3 to open the season. You can listen and watch live coverage of the game on WPIB.com. Click on the “Live TV” tab after logging on. Official game times will be announced at a later date and will be broadcast on WPIB Radio. If anyone would like to make reservations for Mackinac Island the weekend of Dec 2-4, they should call Mission Point Resort and ask for Kate: 906-847-3057 Rooms are $99 per night.
On Friday, November 4 from 5:00 to 7:00pm the Annual Harvest Dinner will take place at Tipper’s Lounge. We encourage everyone to enjoy a turkey dinner with us and support the Gustav Heineman Scholarship. Dinner prices are the following: Adults, $10; Senior Citizens, $8; Children 12 and under, $5. A special thanks in advance to Woody Widmar for all his time and effort in making dinner for us and to Tip Niese for allowing us to use his restaurant.
On Friday, November 11 at 11:15am Put-in-Bay students will honor our veterans. A student-led program will take place in the school’s gymnasium, and all veterans are encouraged to attend, along with the public. Thank you, veterans, for your service to our country.
Congratulations to sixth grader, Macy Ladd for having her artwork, “Pawing Through the Jungle,” qualify for the Ohio Association for Gifted Art Exhibit. Super job Macy!
Eighth grade student, Elena Schroeder had her sonnet published in the Fall, 2016 issue of Creative Kids magazine (a sonnet is 14 lines consisting of 3 quatrains and 1 couplet). Congratulations to Elena!
Poetry
Poetry is what I love
I cannot lie
I write about the sweet dove
I write about the sweet pie
I write in the sunlight
I write in the dark
I love the bright
If not I make a spark
I write under my buckeye tree
It feeds my soul with inspiration
I can write about me
Or I can write about the nation
Poetry is part of me
A part that will always be
Our fifth graders came in third place out of five teams at the Ottawa County Academic Challenge Competition on October 19, while our eighth grades finished in second place out of four teams. Our students study hard to prepare for this competition and do well each year. Whereas the schools we compete against pick their 4-8 brightest students in each grade, we have all our students compete. Great job kids!
