Gibraltar Island, at Put-in-Bay, is the home to The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab. “A freshwater field station since 1895 and part of The Ohio State University since 1925, Stone Lab programs have introduced thousands – from elementary students to adults – to the basics of field-based biological science. Professional researchers from all over the Midwest work here helping to solve the most pressing issues facing the Great Lakes, such as invasive species and toxic algal blooms.”
During the summer months, Stone Lab offers public tours of the research facility and the grounds on Wednesdays. The last opportunity to visit for 2017 will be 9 August 2017. Interested persons meet at The Boardwalk Dock at 10:45, from which they are shuttled to Gibraltar Island by the harbor taxi service ($6 roundtrip). As seen in the photos, independent kayakers also have joined the two-hour event. Don’t miss the last chance next week! Participation is limited to 70 persons.
