Beaver Island, Michigan, was the site of the first Great Lakes Summit organized to determine whether efforts at inter-island collaboration could prove useful in addressing economic, social, and environmental challenges. The conference was held September 25-26, 2017. According to a comprehensive report released on 18 November 2017 by Matt Preisser, Michigan Office of the Great Lakes, “The 2017 Islands Summit successfully seeded the idea for the creation of a new partnership, tentatively called the “Great Lakes Islands Coalition.” South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island stakeholders participated in the event.
