Put-in-Bay School News – by Steve Poe, Superintendent
I recently heard a quote that may be appropriate for this time of year. “To be given a talent, is to be given a gift . . . a gift that should be shared with others.” What are your talents? Could your talents include cooking, repairing, planning and organizing, or building? In this new year, consider how your talents could benefit others.
January is “School Board Recognition Month.” We would like to express our gratitude for the work our Board of Education members do. Each member brings a unique perspective and a different ‘skill set’ that benefits the group as a whole. Always keeping our children’s best interest in mind, their decisions have improved and expanded opportunities and programs for our students. Please express your gratitude to board members: Bill Market, Dino Uszak, John Domer, Karen Gouziou, and Mike Byrnes.
Congratulations to our choir students and Ms. Gay Pippert for another excellent holiday performance on December 13. The preparation our kids put into this program is quite evident! Thanks for putting everyone in the holiday spirit.
Our high school basketball teams began their season with a trip to Beaver Island, Michigan for the inaugural “Gre
at Lakes Islands Tournament.” The girls were the undefeated champions, while the boys were runners-up. Great job, Panthers!

Senior, Lauren Peter lead the girls averaging 23.3 points per game, while senior, Jack Booker led the boys with 21 points per game. Currently, coach Craig Schuffenecker’s girls are still undefeated at 7 – 0. The boys have been without the services of Jack since the team’s return home and stand at 2 – 6. Both teams return to action on Saturday, January 5, hosting Fairport Harding. Come cheer on your Panthers!
The high school Quiz Bowl team competed in a final tournament at Tiffin University on December 14. Our students defeated Seneca East in their first match 295 – 105. They followed this with another victory over Fremont Ross 215 – 85, then lost their third game, 285 – 70 to Upper Sandusky. Our school competed in a five-county league this year consisting of two 8-team divisions. Coach Linda Rence’s team from Put-in-Bay School won third place in the North Division with an overall record of eight wins and four losses, counting the Tiffin University Tournament. They also participated at the Bowling Green State University “Brain Game” where they won one of two competitions. Congratulations on an awesome year Quiz Bowl Team!! Members of the team included: Senior Max Schneider; Juniors Joe Byrnes and Alexandra Knauer; Sophomores, Nora Ladd, Elena Schroeder, and Lucy Schneider; and freshmen Kate Byrnes.
The end of the first semester grading period is Friday, January 18. Grade cards go home on Friday, January 25. Parent /teacher conferences will be scheduled between January 28 – February 8. Teachers will be contacting parents needing to schedule an appointment date/time.
We are looking for parent volunteers to help with maintaining the ice rink. Also, primary elementary students using the ice rink need to be supervised by a parent or adult. Please contact Steve Poe at the school if you are willing to lend a hand or help with supervision.
