Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department launched the ice boat “Freedom” to retrieve two persons from the ice late Sunday afternoon. A large and growing crack, approximately ten feet wide, runs the stretch from Green Island northward to Rattlesnake Island. The rescued individuals
were on the far, west side of the separated ice. After returning the stranded individuals to shore, the ice boat team returned to determine whether other individuals remained in stranded shanties. There were none. Chief Doug Wilhelm reports, “No injury or immersion in the water.
The boat handled well; the ice is 7-8 inches thick. Blowing snow in 25 mph wind created some visibility issues.”
After the incident, many anglers pulled shanties back to shore.
