School News – by Steve Poe, Superintendent
February 14 is not only Valentine’s Day, but it is the 100th day of school! Our elementary teachers have fun math activities planned for this day. The 100th day of school is always a reminder how fast the school year flies by! Spring standardized tests and end of year field trips are right around the corner. Speaking of field trips, this year’s senior class trip will be in Hawaii.
Basketball Coach Craig Schuffenecker and the Panthers are enjoying another successful season. Their final home game is scheduled for February 1. They end their season with a game at Oak Harbor on February 15. After that game our players will stay to cheer on former Put-in-Bay basketball standout, Blake Booker. Blake transferred to Oak Harbor last season as a sophomore and is a starter for the Rockets.
Our National Honor Society members concluded two worthy fund raisers prior to the holidays. We would like to thank those who donated coats for the Ottawa County Salvation Army. In addition to the coat drive, NHS also collected food for the Put-in-Bay Food pantry.
Winners of the January 27th Spelling Bee will compete at the annual Ottawa County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 4. Good luck to those students!
Our students will match their wits at the annual Science Olympiad on Friday, February 7. This will be an all-day affair where students will test their knowledge in science related competitions and activities. There will also be a Science Fair in the gymnasium for students to display projects they have been working on for most the year. Their projects will be judged by faculty and a panel of community judges. The public is invited to come to the school from 8:30am – 10:00am to view all the work the students have done. For those adults who would like to be part of the competition, there will be a Pinewood Derby open to the public! A small number of pinewood derby car kits are available for five dollars each. Please contact science teacher Missi Kowalski, by Monday, February 3, to enter.
School will be dismissed at noon on Friday, February 21 and be followed by our “Winter Break.” School will resume on Monday, March 2.
