South Bass Island weather station SBIO1, out of service since late July, will transmit information again in a day or two, according to NDBC
technicians on the island today. Mr. Billy Beach and Mr. Kevin Cuevas travel around the globe to maintain the data transmission equipment owned and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Data Buoy Center. Prior to arriving on South Bass Island, the gentlemen worked on telemetry issues in Mississippi. The South Bass Island station is located on the property of the historic South Bass Island Lighthouse. The weather information from this tower provides critical data for mariners of the South Channel.
