Autumn foliage always brings a fresh reminder of nature’s ongoing movement through time. After a wet October (over 6″ rain on South Bass Island), early November temperatures dropped sharply and leaf colors quickly changed from deep-green of summer to striking shades of yellow, brown, and red.
A broad look at the island environment acknowledges nature’s seasonal painting. However, a closer examination of individual settings reveals intense splendor! It is this close-up view which presents the intensity of joy felt by many during this time of year.
Walt Whitman, in a lengthy poem entitled AUTUMN, reminds us that while “The fall is upon us” and “overcoats are in demand,” “signs of incipient winter” foretell the months ahead. So get out and cherish the change upon us!
