The Put-in-Bay Township Trustees would like to update everyone on how the first season went with the Ottawa County Sheriff as the Township’s police service.
Police presence and coverage was noticeably improved this year over previous years. South Bass Island as well as Middle Bass Island saw improved response rates and times as well as better overall patrolling. In addition, the Sheriff and the Village Police have been successful in working together to provide coverage for all of Put-in-Bay when there are shortcomings.
Here is a brief breakdown:
– Total number of police calls in the township: 1,962
– Number of times the Village Police assisted or initiated police actions in the Township: 40
– Number of times the Sheriff assisted or initiated police actions in the Village: 170
This first season had its challenges with hiring, acquiring vehicles, equipment, housing, and more but we, the Trustees, feel it was a huge success. Even with the additional start-up costs, we are still on target to finish the year within budget. We are very pleased with the increased protection for the islands and all of the residents, and we look forward to 2024!
Here is what to expect for the 2024 season:
Increased police presence on both South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island through additional officers. A K-9 unit trained specifically for the Bass Islands. In addition, all Sheriff’s Deputies will be trained to run the Township Emergency Services boat to assist the EMS and Fire Department in calls.
