Tree branches sprout buds, red-winged blackbirds punctuate still-dreary woods, buzzards hover overhead, and daffodils offer beaming splotches of spring-time. The seasonal changes are evident on South Bass Island, underscored by an expanded Miller Ferry schedule and the occasional appearance of rented golf carts. While Lake Erie’s temperature still registers below 50°F, and bright sunshine seems evasive, now is the time to plan a Bass Islands excursion and participate in summer’s sunrise.
Arriving, staying, and exploring are threads you should weave into a memorable and satisfying visit. For starters, get a feel for the island attractions by visiting the interactive Web page presented by Miller Boat Line (link below). You will discover a comprehensive display that will whet your appetite for adventure. Once you’ve caught island fever, settle on your transportation, accommodation, and entertainment priorities. A nicely prepared plan will enhance your satisfaction level and deliver the most rewarding Lake Erie experience tuned to your interests.
We’re all familiar with the expression, “Getting there is half the fun!” No matter how much truth you place in that, traveling to the Bass Islands by boat is the way to go. If you don’t have your own, you will find the Jet Express and Miller Boat Line have all the angles covered. For a traditional ferry ride and the option of taking your car over, rely on the Miller Ferry. If a quicker trip with luggage only is what you need, the Jet Express is rather convenient. Both companies offer comfort, great views, and superb access to golf cart rentals. Note, the Jet Express does not serve Middle Bass Island, but a nice passenger connection is available from downtown Put-in-Bay via the Sonny-S Boat Line.
Day trips to the Bass Islands make terrific escapades, but for a thorough experience you will want to stay overnight. Plentiful lodging choices with varying amenities make extended visits rewarding. Whether a charming bed & breakfast, lake-view hotel, summer cottage, pool-side bar, or camping is your style, you will find the right spot with a little on-line research. The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce offers a nice overview of its members’ offerings.
This is the part of your voyage where you are in for real treats! Water sports and picnics, nature and historical tours, family-friendly playgrounds, miniature golf and cave exploration, arts & crafts and souvenir shopping, charter fishing, wine-tasting and lake-side dining , bar-hopping with live entertainment, and late-night dancing–ALL within an easy stroll in Put-in-Bay village or a short golf-cart ride on easily navigated streets. To keep you energized, whether you need a hardy breakfast, a delicious burger or fish entree, a fresh Greek salad , loaded burrito, something sophisticated, or simply a perfect ice cream delight, the island restaurateurs deliver!
