Fantasy Island Comes to Life on North Bass for One-Day History Tour
On Tuesday, June 24, a lucky group of islanders and visitors took part in a rare and imaginative journey to North Bass Island — also known as the Isle of St. George — for a one-of-a-kind, island-wide history tour presented by the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society and Museum.
The trip began with a ferry ride from the Miller Boat Line downtown dock, with participants arriving on the remote island to find themselves immersed in the theme of the classic TV show Fantasy Island. Guests were greeted at the dock by none other than Mr. Rourke and Tattoo, setting the tone for a day filled with quirky attractions and historical insight.
The self-guided golf cart tour included stops like:
-
The Schoolhouse, offering restrooms, crafts, food, and desserts
-
The Church, where Mother Mary gave historical context and offered wedding vow renewals
-
The Cemetery, serving as the central hub for raffles, a short skit, and prize announcements
-
“Caddyshack Revisited,” a putting green challenge hosted by costumed actors
-
“Fantasy Oddities Trail,” a driveable path showcasing island curiosities
-
Burris Yard, featuring axe throwing and the cast of Gilligan’s Island — 50 years later
Prizes were awarded for the best decorated golf cart, best axe throw, and best golfer, with each group receiving door prize numbers upon arrival. A map of North Bass helped guide attendees around the island, while rules reminded everyone to avoid the active construction zones.
Though the day was playful and theatrical, the purpose was meaningful: raffle proceeds supported the preservation of the island’s historic church, ensuring its legacy continues for future generations.
North Bass, largely owned by the State of Ohio and typically inaccessible to the public, holds a rich history in grape cultivation. In the late 1800s, over 400 acres were dedicated to vineyards, helping define the agricultural legacy of the Lake Erie Islands.
The event blended history, theater, and community in a way only the islands can — turning a quiet Tuesday into a truly unforgettable island adventure.
