Put-in-Bay Panther Newsletter: October Updates from the School

Put-in-Bay School Principal Scott Mangas has released the October Panther Newsletter, sharing highlights from the classroom, the athletic fields, and ongoing renovation projects that impact students and the community.

Volleyball Update

The Lady Panthers volleyball team continues to grow stronger each week, showing steady improvement and leadership on the court. Juniors Olivia Christensen, Emma Michael, and Juliana Scarpelli have stepped into leadership roles, supported by teammates Katie Scarpelli, Kate Huber, and Meredith Cooper.

The program’s future looks bright thanks to a talented group of seventh graders—Carmen Castaneda, Piper Koehler, Sophia Kruszynski, Melody O’Donnell, and Harper Scarpelli—who are already making contributions. Coach Schuffenecker praised the junior leadership and commended the team’s effort throughout the season.

Cross Country

The Panther Cross Country team continues to show determination, competing recently in the Miller 5K and upcoming meets in Oak Harbor (Sept. 23) and Maumee (Sept. 27). The team is preparing for Districts in October, battling through injuries while demonstrating resilience and toughness both mentally and physically.

Quiz Bowl

The Quiz Bowl team, led by advisor Maddie Pugh, practices twice a week during lunch to prepare for competitions. A recent home meet was supported by Phoebe Koehler and Renee Market, who served as readers and were recognized for their professionalism. The Panthers now look ahead to their next competition at Fremont St. Joe’s on October 14.

1919 Renovations

The school district is continuing improvements on the historic 1919 building, with additional upgrades planned for connectivity and HVAC systems throughout the facility. The district is working with Garmann Miller on a facility assessment survey, and the next step will be securing an architect to guide the project.

Safety First

Safety remains a top priority at Put-in-Bay School. On September 4, the district conducted a functional safety drill in collaboration with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. The state-required exercise was successful, with students and staff performing well and showing preparedness in the event of an emergency.
