Put-in-Bay School has once again been recognized for its excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The Ohio Academy of Science announced that Put-in-Bay was among 76 schools statewide to receive the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 2024–2025 school year.

This marks the third consecutive year that PIB School has earned the honor, highlighting the school’s ongoing commitment to hands-on learning, student research, and innovative classroom experiences.

Teachers recognized for their work include Adam Danes, Carol Cerny, Craig Schuffenecker, Dan Kowalski, Jody Amsden, Johnna Danes, Katie Schneider, Liz Knauer, and Melissa Kowalski.

The award is given to schools that go beyond traditional classroom activities by holding local science fairs, encouraging participation in regional science events, and integrating project-based learning that develops teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

“Science is a critical driver of economic growth by fostering innovation, creating new industries, and generating high-skilled jobs,” said Michael E. Woytek, Executive Director of the Ohio Academy of Science, in the statewide announcement.

With this recognition, Put-in-Bay School continues to stand out among Ohio schools for preparing students to think critically, work collaboratively, and explore the possibilities of STEM education.
