2023 Great Lakes Islands Basketball Up Next!

The 2023 Great Lakes Island tournament is about to tip off this year in Mackinac Island, Michigan. The Panthers will depart school Thursday morning, 7 December 2023, drive to St.Ignace and stay there for the evening.  Early Friday morning, the Panthers will board the ferry and depart for Mackinac Island.  They will walk to their hotel, check in and get ready for the day.  The Panthers will be joined in the 5th annual tournament by host Mackinac Island Lakers and fellow Michiganders Beaver Island Islanders, and Bucks of Washington Island, Wisconsin. The two-day tournament will crown the champions of girls and boys Great Lakes basketball.

In the men’s tournament, all four schools will compete, and Washington Island looks to defend last year’s crown.  In the girls tournament, unfortunately, four-time defending champion Put-in-Bay Panthers will be unable to defend their crown as they do not have enough girls to field a team this season.  Two girls will compete and play on the boys team.
The Great Lakes Island Tournament was developed at the GLIA summit on Beaver Island by former PiB school superintendent Steve Poe. The inaugural tournament started in 2018 on Beaver Island.  There has been a tournament every year except 2020 due to Covid.  Beaver Island boys won the first three boys tournaments, losing the crown last year to Washington Island.
