Academic Quiz League Returns to Action

The Seneca / Wyandot / Put-in-Bay / Sandusky High School Quiz Bowl League is adding the name of another county to its title, Crawford. Buckeye Central has taken the place of Bettsville, now part of the Old Fort district. The 18 League teams are divided into three divisions: North, Central, and South. The six teams in each division will play each other and also across divisions. Leagues and tournaments across the state send their winners to the Ohio Academic Competition (OAC) regionals in the spring, and the winner and the runner-up at the regional level advance to finals in Columbus. The local League will be sending its three division winners to regionals.

Along with Buckeye Central’s Amy Betts, the League welcomes two other new coaches, Jaime Lininger, coach of the New Riegel team and Rachel Fitzwater, coach of the St. Joseph Central Catholic team.

The League season opened on September 16 with matches at Put-in-Bay in the far north of League territory, Upper Sandusky in the far south, and Calvert in Tiffin in the middle.

In the North Division, Clyde, last year’s North Division winner, and Old Fort, and Saint Joe’s are tied at 2-1. In the Central division, Columbian, last year’s Central Division winner; Hopewell-Loudon, which has lost only two matches in the last two years of League play and was last year’s South Division and also tournament winner; and St. Wendelin, each won all three of their matches. Mohawk has the lead in the South Division, winning all three of its matches. Seneca East (2-1) is second. Of the 18 teams, 15, including Buckeye Central in its debut, won at least one match. With only a five-point difference for three of the matches and only 10 for the fourth, in four matches, the Clyde and Mohawk, North Central and Bridges, Put-in-Bay and Old Fort, and Seneca East and New Riegel matches, the win could just as easily have gone to the other team.

The next meeting of the League teams will be in October at Bridges Community Academy, Calvert High School, and North Central Academy, all in Tiffin.
