Airboat Safe Way to Check Lake Erie Ice

Sunday afternoon, Michael McCann launched an airboat from South Bass Island State Park.  While his destination was not reported, it appears to have been a safe way to check the depth of Lake Erie ice around the Bass Islands, according to Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department  Co-Chief Doug Wilhelm.  Wilhelm said the ice remains about five inches thick away from open water.
