Annually, approximately 850,000 people visit the island community, and 150,000 visitors take the elevator to the top of the 352 foot Monument. In addition to the Monument, the park includes a Visitor Center, a ranger station, an administrative office, a maintenance facility, and six park housing units within the 25 acre site.

Also, on island is an excellent K12 school system with approximately 80 students and two churches (Catholic and Episcopal). There are no medical facilities/services on the island other than EMS. Other services are located on the mainland in nearby cities.

Boating, sailing, kayaking, fishing including ice fishing, swimming, golf, bicycling, and local attractions are popular island activities. December through March, when the island is often icebound, transportation on and off the island is limited to commercial airplanes or private airboats.

The National Park Service will consider telework in winter months when daily commuting is not practical.  Park housing may be available.
