Put-in-Bay School Makes Name for Itself in Ohio State-Wide Science Program

More than 70 junior and senior high school students participated in the Northwest Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NWOSEF) held Saturday, 24 February 2024 at Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio.

This was the first year Put-in-Bay School has been invited to participate in the Northwest Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, a state-level affiliate of the Society for Science’s International Science and Engineering Fair. The top 2 students in grades 9-12 are eligible to move on to the ISEF, and the top 10% of students in grades 5-8 are eligible to move on to the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.

Unfortunately, Put-in-Bay School only had 2 students available to participate this year due to the event taking place over winter break.  However, the 2 students who participated represented our school very well.  Congratulations go to Cody Kowalski and Caleb Kowalski.

Received an overall project score of Excellent

Awarded 2nd place in the Physics Category

Caleb Kowalski

Project Title: The Effects of Cover Crop Type on the Nutrient Load of Runoff

Received an overall project score of Superior

Awarded 1st place in the Plant Science Category

Selected for Junior High Super Judging (only top 10 projects in grades 5-8 invited)

Super Judging Overall Winner for grades 5-8

1. Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge 2024 – Outstanding Performance at a Society for Science Affiliated Science Fair (this award allows Caleb to move on to the National competition)
2. Northwest State Community College Foundation Award (received full scholarship to a summer STEM camp)
3. Favorito Environmental Pioneer Award – 2nd Place – Grades 5-8 ($10 cash prize)

Put-in-Bay School also has six students who head to the Ohio Academy of Science District 6 Science Fair to be held on March 23.  Stay tuned for those results as students who recieve a superior score there will be move on to the State Science Day competition.
