Put-in-Bay School Posts Enthusiastic Start to the Academic Year
November 2014
School News – by Steve Poe, Superintendent
On October 16th, with assistance from our local police department, our school conducted lock-down and evacuation drills. Our school would go into “lock-down” in cases when there is no imminent threat to students, but we need for them to stay in their classrooms. This could include, but not be limited to: a stray animal got into the building; a person in the school needs medical attention; a search of the building is necessary. Our school would announce an “evacuation” when there is a potential threat to students and they are able to quickly get out of the building. When students are not able to safely exit the school, they have been taught to go into “emergency lock-down.”
Again this year, our students performed admirably and the drills were a success.
Once again this year the school will be utilizing the School Reach Automated Information System to send important/relevant information to students, staff and parents.
We will use this system to remind parents of events at school and notify parents of school delays and closings. If you have a change in phone numbers or otherwise fail to receive these voice messages and/or text messages, please notify the school.
The cross-country season came to a close for most our runners on Saturday, October 18th at the district meet in Galion. Our runners enjoyed this season competing amongst each other and striving for their personal best times in each race. They have trained since early August and everyone showed great improvement. Congratulations to our Jr. High runners: Joseph Byrnes, Hannah Lence, and Jack Booker. Our high school runners included: Erin Urge, Gwena Market, Tatey Kowalski, Sophia Schroeder, Tyler King, Ian Pippert-Ladd, Meredith Engel, and Elliot Kowalski. Once again this year, Coach Randi Wertenbach saw her top runner, Elliot, qualify for the OHSAA Regional Meet. He finished the race with a time of 17:17 and finished in 27th place out of 135 runners. It should be noted that these were the fastest runners in the region. Congratulations on an impressive cross-country career, Elliot!
On Friday, November 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 the Annual Harvest Dinner will take place at Tipper’s Lounge. We encourage everyone to enjoy a turkey dinner with us and support the Gustave Heineman Scholarship. Dinner prices are the following: Adults, $10; Senior Citizens, $7; Children 12 and Under, $5. A special thanks in advance to Woody Widmar for all his time and effort in making dinner for all of us!
On Tuesday, November 11th at 11:15 Put-in-Bay School students will honor veterans who have served our country with speeches and patriotic songs. This program will take place in the gymnasium. All veterans and those currently serving our country are encouraged to attend, along with the public. Thank you veterans, for your service!
After nearly thirty years of teaching, Annemarie Eriksen is retiring on November 14th. For the many islanders who had Ms. Eriksen in school, the next time you see her, give her a big thank you for her dedication to the children of the islands. Congratulations Annemarie and thank you for making a difference!
