Put-in-Bay’s 38th Blessing of the Fleet

Perry’s Monument and International Peace Memorial Staff honor the Perry Longboat.

Deacon O’Donnel, Pastor Schaaf, Father Solon

Each year since, 1986, the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce marks the start of boating season with Blessing of the Fleet.  Island boats, air services, and safety personnel take part in a tradition brought to America long ago by immigrants from Europe.  Around the world, clergy from different faiths gather in celebration to pray for the safety and success of the men and women who spend their time in service to sea and lake communities.

According to this year’s event program, “A priest and former fisherman once said of this tradition, ‘The blessing is not that God has promised to remove all obstacles and dangers.  The blessing is that He is with us always.'”

The ceremony, held at the Jet Express Dock, began with an introduction by Reverend Robert Solon of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Put-in-Bay.  He and Pastor Jarrod Schaaf of Saint John’s Lutheran, Port Clinton; and Deacon Jim O’Donnell, Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Put-in-Bay, were the officiants.

The Put-in-Bay School Choir, directed by Ms. Gay Pippert-Ladd, sang the National Anthem and a touching song entitled, “Come Home.”  Mayor Judy Berry was unable to attend; however, PiB Chamber of Commerce Director Wendy Chambers greeted and welcomed participants and community observers.

Perry’s Victory, Put-in-Bay Police, Put-in-Bay EMS, and Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Jet Express, Miller Boat Line, Sonny-S Boat Line, Boardwalk Harbor Operations Water Taxi, and Put-in-Bay Floating Tiki all gathered for the special occasion.  A superb fly-over for the blessing included Griffing Flying Service and Island Air Taxi.

“The Lord bless you and keep you.  The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace, now and evermore. AMEN.”
