Quiz Bowl Promotes Pride in Academics

Put in Bay SchoolOn Thursday, December 11, over 200 team members from the 18 schools of the Seneca / Wyandot / Put-in-Bay / Sandusky / Crawford High School Quiz Bowl League together with their coaches and tournament readers met at the First Lutheran Church in Tiffin for its 29th annual double-elimination tournament.

The day started with the presentation of trophies to the three top schools in each of the League’s three divisions: Clyde, North Central Academy, Old Fort, Put-in-Bay, Ross, Saint Joseph Central Catholic, the North Division schools; Bridges Community Academy, Calvert, Columbian, Fostoria, Saint Wendelin, Seneca East, the Central Division schools; and Buckeye Central, Carey, Hopewell-Loudon, Mohawk, New Riegel, Upper Sandusky, the South Division schools.

North Division teams taking home trophies and ribbons are: Clyde (8-1), repeating as North Division winner from a year ago, first; Old Fort (5-3), second; and Put-in-Bay (5-4), last year’s second place winner, third. In the Central Division, the top teams are: Hopewell-Loudon, (9-0), first; Columbian (9-1), second — both Division winners a year ago; and St. Wendelin (7-2), third. The South Division winners are: Seneca East (8-1), a second place winner a year ago, first; Mohawk, (5-4), a third place Division winner a year ago, second; and Carey (4-5), third.

In the tournament, wins were fairly widespread with 14 of the 18 teams winning at least one match. Hopewell-Loudon had come out on top in all its matches this year just as they had a year ago. That did not change in the tournament. They were the only team to remain in the top bracket and handily won the tournament. Seneca East was runner-up, taking home both the second place tournament trophy and their first place Division trophy. St. Wendelin was the winner of third place of both the tournament and their Division.

Hopewell-Loudon, with its double titles, Clyde, winner of the North Division, and Seneca East, winner of the South Division, will participate in the Northwest Ohio Academic Regional Competition (O.A.C.) on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Regional winners and runners-up advance to the state championship in Columbus Saturday, May 2, 2015.
