Put-in-Bay Township’s Fish Waste Disposal Service Returns for 2025

PUT-IN-BAY, OH – Put-in-Bay Township has announced the return of its Fish Waste Disposal Container, available from the first week of April through the first week of May. This annual service helps keep the island clean and prevents illegal dumping of fish waste.

Why Is the Fish Waste Container Removed in May?

As spring temperatures rise, decomposing fish waste produces strong odors that can spread to nearby residences. To prevent this, the container is removed in early May.

How Much Waste Does the Township Handle?

In 2024, the township collected 87,880 pounds of fish waste—almost 44 tons, or the equivalent weight of 144 golf carts!

Why Does the Township Offer This Service?

By providing a central disposal area, the township reduces illegal dumping and keeps the island cleaner. In 2024, the township spent $16,241.11 to provide this essential service.

How Is the Cost Covered?

The fish waste disposal container is funded by taxpayer dollars, but the township is seeking donations to help offset costs. Community contributions can ensure the program continues.
