Put-in-Bay has earned a spot on WorldAtlas’ list of “11 Small Towns in the Great Lakes with the Best Downtowns,” joining destinations across the United States and Canada.
The September 8 article by Andrew Douglas highlights the South Bass Island community’s walkable downtown, waterfront dining and historic landmarks. Sandusky also made the list, giving Ohio’s Lake Erie shores and islands two mentions.
In its Put-in-Bay section, WorldAtlas points to familiar island stops, including the Boardwalk and its lobster bisque, the businesses along Catawba Avenue, and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. The article also notes the role golf carts play in helping visitors explore beyond downtown.
The selection places Put-in-Bay alongside Great Lakes destinations including Port Stanley and Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Bayfield in Wisconsin, and St. Joseph and Traverse City in Michigan. Each community is featured for a downtown that gives travelers reasons to explore beyond the waterfront.
For Put-in-Bay, the recognition brings attention to the combination of dining, island character and history that visitors encounter within a short walk of the harbor.
