Put-in-Bay Highlighted as a Top Ohio Travel Destination

Put-in-Bay continues to stand out as one of Ohio’s most popular and unique travel destinations, drawing visitors from across the Midwest with its mix of natural wonders, family attractions, and island charm.

One of the most talked-about stops on the island is Heineman’s Winery, home to the world’s largest geode. Located more than 30 feet underground, the Crystal Cave stays naturally cool and showcases crystal formations with naturally occurring 180-degree angles — a rare geological feature that draws thousands of visitors each year.

But the island isn’t just about what lies beneath the surface.

“We’re an everyday island getaway – we really encourage our families and empty nesters,” said Wendy Chambers, Executive Director of the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. In addition to its lively downtown and lake views, the island features attractions like the Butterfly House and Family Fun Center, offering hours of entertainment for all ages (both featured in our Family Adventure Tour).

Access to the island is part of the experience. Travelers arrive by ferry — either via Miller Ferry, which accommodates both passengers and vehicles, or the passenger-only Jet Express, which docks directly in downtown Put-in-Bay. Once on the island, golf carts are the main form of transportation, adding a fun and casual twist to getting around.

While Put-in-Bay may still be a surprise to some travelers, tourism across Ohio’s lakefront region continues to grow. According to Shores & Islands Ohio, the area welcomes between 10 to 13 million visitors annually, with consistent year-over-year growth. And once visitors experience the island firsthand, they often return.
