Lake Erie Water Level Hits 6′ Above Low Water Datum

Put-in-Bay is a sea-loving, resort community, but Friday nor’easters are taking their toll on an already short summer season.  At 1:12 p.m. NOAA reports Lake Erie is 73 inches above Low Water Datum at Marblehead, Ohio.  Water levels are an absolutely crucial piece of information for reading nautical charts, as the water depths shown on them are referenced to a low water datum that is calculated, in some parts of the country, from almost a century of observations. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey explains, “If the lake level is below or above low water datum, the existing depths are correspondingly greater or lesser than the charted depths.”
