Harbor Ice

Put-in-Bay Harbor ice formation captures considerable attention during the winter.  This is especially true this year as Lake Erie water temperature around the Bass Islands only briefly plummeted to conditions necessary for the “good ice” required for ice fishing, ice boating, and skating.!

It is interesting to note, according to an education resource, “The density of ice is less than that of liquid water. Therefore, ice floats on the surface. The ice layer at lower temperature floats over the water below it. Due to this, the freezing of water into ice occurs continuously from the top towards the bottom.”

Meanwhile, as we appreciate the “art of ice,” as in the mosaic pictured, temperature measurements at Marblehead Station continue above freezing.
