In Spite of Catawba Island Ice Rescue, Some Remain Intrepid

A  Lake Erie ice floe near Catawba Island was the scene of a combined rescue effort by Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Ottawa Sheriff’s Department, and US Coast Guard crews from Station Marblehead and Air Station Detroit on Monday.  According to the official USCG press release, twenty people were brought to safety from the ice floe which was one-half mile from shore.

Meanwhile, after  this morning’s early icy-rain, which closed Put-in-Bay School for the day, some fishermen were on the West Shore ice at South Bass Island this afternoon.  PiB Fire Chief Greg Dobos, in a conversation with PiBDaily™ yesterday, emphasized deteriorating conditions merit extreme caution.  He said, “People have no business being out there now!”
