Put-in-Bay School Especially Active Prior to Break

School News – by Steve Poe, SuperintendentPiB School

At the January 13th Board of Education meeting, our Board passed a resolution declaring January 30th as “Heroes in Blue” day. This day was meant to recognize and honor local, state, and county law enforcement for “their continuous and courageous service to the students, staff, and residents of the Put-in-Bay Local School District.”

We would like to encourage everyone to come to the Jeffrey Verhoff
Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday, February 4th. All proceeds from this event benefit the Verhoff Scholarship Fund. The dinner will be held at the Town Hall from 5:00 – 7:00pm.

On Friday, February 6th, our K-3 students celebrate the 100th day of school. Mrs. Troiano, Ms. Wolff, and Mrs. Bianchi have fun math activities planned for this day that the students are sure to enjoy.

Basketball Coach Craig Schuffenecker and the Panthers are enjoying another successful season. A complete summary of the Panther Basketball season will be published next month. We have our final home game with Bowling Green Christian on Saturday, February 7st. Come support the Panthers!
Archery Coach Susan Harrington has scheduled home archery matches on Monday February 9th and Thursday, February 12th, both starting at 5:30pm. The public is encouraged to attend these matches, as our students prepare for the State Archery Tournament next month.

Winners from our January 23rd Grades 5 – 8 Spelling Bee will compete at the Annual Ottawa County Spelling Bee scheduled on Tuesday, February 10th. Good Luck to those students!  Students will match their wits at the annual Science Olympiad on Friday, February 13th. This is an all-day affair where students test their knowledge in science-related competitions and activities. This year, Mrs. Kowalski will incorporate a “Science Fair” concept, where students will display a science project to be judged by the faculty. The public is invited to come to the school this day and view all work the students have done and to watch the competitions.

On Friday, February 20th we will have a 12:30 dismissal. We will return to school from Winter Break on Monday, March 2nd.

The month of March is a big month for testing. This year we will administer the new PARCC tests (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). Our teachers will spend the next couple weeks preparing our students for these on-line tests. Parents are asked to encourage their children to do their best and to get plenty of sleep the night before the tests.
