Put-in-Bay School Students Prepare for Travel

Put in Bay SchoolSchool News – by Steve Poe, Superintendent

After a seemingly longer winter than usual, spring is upon us and our students are anxious to walk or ride their bikes to school again. Recess for the primary elementary students can now be out on the playground and educational field trips can be planned to take advantage of the beautiful weather.  One such field trip will occur on May 6th when our elementary students will travel to Findlay, Ohio, to learn about the history of our railroads. Compliments of the Duggan family, Island Transportation will donate the transportation for this field trip, while the Miller Boat Line covers all ferry fees. This is just one example of the partnerships our school enjoys with local businesses.   Other field trips scheduled for this spring include bird banding on the island, a trip to Magee Marsh, traveling to a Toledo Mud Hens baseball game, a visit to the NOMS fitness center in Sandusky, and the annual 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C. and Gettysburg.
This year, our junior class will join the seniors on the annual senior class trip. Juniors Ian Pippert-Ladd, Meredith Engel, and Jessica Krueger will travel with seniors Gunnar Auger and Elliot Kowalski to Hawaii on April 3rd. We wish them safe travels and sunshine!
Congratulations to senior Elliot Kowalski on his academic accomplishments. He will represent Put-in-Bay School at the annual Ottawa County Top Ten Banquet on April 15th. Elliot plans to attend Purdue University in the fall; he is the son of Dan and Valerie Kowalski.
Our search for a school treasurer to replace Kit Knaser, who is retiring effective July 31st, will conclude on April 14th when the board officially announces her replacement. Fourteen people submitted letters of interest and / or resumes. Interviews were conducted last month.
Our students would like to thank those who contributed “loose pocket change” in raising money for the Leukemia Foundation’s “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser. The exact amount raised will be announced next month.
And finally, our students and teachers did a super job last month on all the new standardized tests that schools were required to administer this year. We appreciate the teacher’s for showing flexibility with their schedules, Mrs. VanNess for coordinating all the tests, Mrs. Cerny for giving up most of her time during these test weeks, and the students for their patience and effort. Results of all the tests won’t be known till the fall.
