To many, Robert “Rob” Russell was a husband, a father of four, a brother, a son, and a friend. To his family, he was the steady presence who always showed up, the comforting hand that never hesitated to help, and the man who made every moment with those he loved count.
This week, Rob’s family shared his story publicly as they announced a GoFundMe to support his wife and four children, hoping people would remember the man behind the headlines.
The Russell family had traveled to Put-in-Bay to celebrate Rob’s 40th birthday — a milestone that should have been filled with laughter, family, and memories. Instead, they are now mourning an unimaginable loss.
The celebration was cut tragically short when Rob lost his life in this week’s shooting on Put-in-Bay. In the days since, his family has focused on ensuring he is remembered for the life he lived rather than the tragedy that took him.
In a message shared by his family, Rob is remembered as “a constant presence, a source of strength, a comforting hand, a helping hand, a perseverer, a man of unwavering faith, and a father who intentionally led and loved his family and children toward Christ every single day.”
His sister, Christi Russell, shared additional memories with Put-in-Bay Daily in hopes of helping others know the man Rob was beyond the tragedy.
She said summers on the Lake Erie islands were a cherished family tradition. Rob and his wife loved bringing their children to Put-in-Bay, where they spent years making memories together. After purchasing an inexpensive houseboat, the family enjoyed countless weekends on the water, fishing, working together, and simply enjoying life on the islands as a family.
Fishing was one of Rob’s greatest joys. He loved spending time on the water with his three sons, and during their visits, they often picked up handyman jobs around the island together. His youngest child, his daughter, was “Daddy’s little girl,” Christi said, describing the special bond they shared.
More than anything, Rob loved being with his family.
His family says he leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, selflessness, and unconditional love—a husband devoted to his wife, a father who intentionally guided his children, and a man whose kindness touched countless lives.
In the days since his passing, an outpouring of support has come from friends, neighbors, and even strangers. Messages of sympathy, prayers, meals, and donations have poured in as people look for ways to help the Russell family during the difficult days ahead.
As of Friday morning, the family’s GoFundMe had raised more than $7,700 toward its goal.
In the fundraiser, Rob’s wife expressed her gratitude to everyone who has reached out.
“We don’t have words to adequately thank you right now, but we feel your prayers carrying us through each hour. Please continue praying for our children, for both of our families, and for all who are grieving the loss of such an incredible man.”
For Christi, sharing these memories was important because she wanted people to know the man her brother was—not simply the tragedy that took him from those who loved him.
Those wishing to support Lindsay Russell and the couple’s four children can do so through the family’s official GoFundMe campaign.
