Lake Erie Seiche Arrives: Water Levels Drop Sharply at Put-in-Bay
The Lake Erie seiche forecast earlier this week has arrived.
By late Wednesday morning, strong northwest winds pushed water out of the western basin, causing a sharp drop in shoreline water levels across Put-in-Bay.
Large sections of lakebed became exposed — particularly along the downtown waterfront and near Oak Point State Park — revealing rocks, shells, and debris normally underwater. Residents walked out along the newly exposed shoreline, capturing rare views as the water receded.
On Tuesday, the Miller Ferry announced limited service for Wednesday and a full cancellation on Thanksgiving Day due to expected falling water levels. With today’s rapidly draining shoreline, those precautions appear well-timed.
The National Weather Service’s Gale Warning remains in effect through Friday morning, with continued gusts in the 40–50 mph range contributing to the ongoing seiche setup. Water levels may continue fluctuating as winds shift.
Officials continue to advise caution around exposed lakebed areas, reminding residents that returning water can come in quickly and unpredictably.
