Loud Boom Heard Across Ohio, Reported on Put-in-Bay Tuesday; NWS Points to Possible Meteor

A loud boom heard across parts of Ohio around 9 a.m. Tuesday was also heard on Put-in-Bay.

Island reports indicate the sound was noticeable locally, with multiple confirmed hearing on South Bass Island.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, early data suggests the boom may have been caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere.

“The latest GLM imagery does suggest that the boom was a result of a meteor,” the agency said in a response shared on social media.

Reports of the boom came from across northern Ohio, including areas along Lake Erie. Sound can travel efficiently over water, which may explain why it was clearly heard on the islands.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

This remains a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
