Dear Island Residents and Visitors,
As we put another season behind us and look forward to a new one, I am writing to provide an update on my commitment to enforce laws and ordinances to ensure the safety of all those who spend time on our beautiful island.
I am pleased to report that thanks to the to the hard work and increased presence of the Put-in-Bay Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and ODNR, citations for open container violations alone increased over 400% compared to last year.
This dramatic increase reflects stronger enforcement, not more violations. The majority of our residents and visitors are law-abiding people who want to enjoy the island responsibly. By citing those who disregard the rules, we enable the island to be a welcoming place for all.
Looking ahead, I am thankful that these agencies have expressed a willingness to maintain an active presence on the island for the 2024 season and beyond. With their partnership, I am confident we can continue keeping Put-in-Bay safe while preserving the special character of this place we call home.
Please reach out if you have any other questions or concerns. I appreciate the community’s support as we work together to care for this island we cherish.
Sincerely,
Judy Berry, Mayor of Put-in-Bay
