Put-in-Bay School Earns Fourth Consecutive Edison Award
Put-in-Bay School has earned the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the fourth consecutive year, with nine island educators recognized for their work during the 2025–2026 school year.
The school is one of 77 across Ohio selected by the Ohio Academy of Science for the honor. Announced September 23, the awards recognize schools and teachers who give students opportunities to conduct scientific research, explore technological design, and learn beyond the classroom.
Put-in-Bay’s recognized educators are Adam Danes, Carol Cerny, Craig Schuffenecker, Dan Kowalski, Jody Amsden, Johnna Danes, Katie Schneider, Liz Knauer, and Melissa Kowalski. Statewide, 1,249 teachers were honored.
Established in 1985, the Edison Awards recognize sustained efforts to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, collectively known as STEM.
Schools must meet participation requirements involving a local science fair and Regional Science Day, or qualify through regional participation when no local fair is held. Students must also take part in at least one additional science opportunity beyond the classroom.
The award emphasizes learning through investigation and student projects, helping students develop communication, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
“We are proud to honor these schools and teachers for preparing students for the future,” said Michael E. Woytek, executive director of the Ohio Academy of Science.
Each honored school will receive a Governor’s Award certificate, and recognized teachers will receive complimentary membership in the Academy. The program is funded by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Technology Investments.
