Dynamic weather systems bring amazing changes to Lake Erie. Open water between the east side of South Bass Island and Kelleys Island seems to promise the arrival of spring. However, a good look westward shows a healthy ice-fishing environment. The ice measures 10-inches and the water below, according to reliable sources, is not murky near Rattlesnake Island. Tuesday’s high temperature was 21°F; peak SSW wind gust was 32mph at South Bass Island Lighthouse.
Pleasantly warm 40ºF, sunshine, and good ice! Such were today’s conditions for ice-fishing off South Bass Island’s West Shore on Lake Erie today. A multitude of all-terrain vehicles, stick-built shanties, and portable fishing tents dotted the horizon between Green Island and Rattlesnake Island. The ice-road to Middle Bass Island also saw a fair amount of traffic.
