Educational Adventures Return to Put-in-Bay This Summer
As summer gets underway on Put-in-Bay, several educational attractions and programs are returning for the season, giving families plenty of opportunities to explore Lake Erie, local wildlife, island history, and hands-on science.
The recent reopening of the Aquatic Visitor Center marks the beginning of another summer filled with learning experiences for visitors of all ages. From wildlife programs and science demonstrations to historic island tours, Put-in-Bay offers much more than just beaches, golf carts, and waterfront dining.
Aquatic Visitor Center Open for the Season
The Aquatic Visitor Center is now open for the 2026 season and once again welcoming visitors to explore the fascinating world of Lake Erie.
The center features interactive exhibits focused on the lake’s fish, wildlife, boating heritage, and aquatic ecosystems. Visitors can learn about native species, commercial fishing, conservation efforts, and the important role Lake Erie plays in Ohio’s economy and environment.
Admission to the center is free, making it a great stop for families looking to add an educational experience to their island visit. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between June 1 and October 1.
Wild Tuesdays Begin Next Week
Beginning June 9, the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center will once again host its popular Wild Tuesdays program.
Held every Tuesday throughout the summer, the free educational series gives children and families the opportunity to learn directly from wildlife experts, conservation organizations, and environmental educators.
Each week features a different topic and presenter. This year’s schedule includes programs focused on bats, birds, geology, water cycles, backyard wildlife, snakes, turtles, spotted lanternflies, and more.
The hands-on format makes Wild Tuesdays one of the island’s most engaging educational programs for young visitors.
Put-in-Bay Science Days Return
Stone Laboratory will once again bring science to life through its annual Put-in-Bay Science Days program.
Held throughout the summer at the South Bass Island Lighthouse grounds, Science Days gives visitors the chance to meet researchers and educators while learning about the Lake Erie ecosystem.
Programs feature live fish, wildlife, and other creatures that call Lake Erie home. Topics throughout the summer include island birds, native plants, aquatic invasive species, harmful algal blooms, and scientific research taking place on the lake.
The free program offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the science happening right in their own backyard.
Explore Gibraltar Island
Another unique educational experience available this summer is the opportunity to tour Gibraltar Island.
Home to Stone Laboratory and historic Cooke Castle, Gibraltar Island is one of Put-in-Bay’s most intriguing landmarks. While the island is typically closed to the public, guided tours during the summer provide visitors with a chance to explore its history and natural features.
Guests can learn about the island’s role in scientific research, view historic structures, visit glacial grooves, and enjoy scenic views overlooking Put-in-Bay Harbor.
For many visitors, a Gibraltar Island Tour offers a side of Put-in-Bay they never knew existed.
More Family-Friendly Learning Experiences
Families looking for additional educational opportunities can find them throughout the island.
Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center features attractions including the Butterfly House, where visitors can walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world.
The Put-in-Bay Tour Train offers a narrated journey around the island, sharing stories and historical information about South Bass Island’s most notable landmarks.
Visitors can also stop by Perry’s Victory Visitor Center to learn about the Battle of Lake Erie and the important role Put-in-Bay played during the War of 1812.
Discover a Different Side of Put-in-Bay
While Put-in-Bay is often known for its entertainment, restaurants, and waterfront attractions, the island also offers countless opportunities to learn, explore, and discover.
