Garden Club Donates Bench for Island Park

Garden Club Put in BayPut-in-Bay Garden Club completes an island beautification project annually.  This year’s contribution is a sturdy bench from which visitors to Oak Point State Park (the smallest in Ohio) can enjoy the inspiring view across Put-in-Bay Harbor to Perry’s Monument.  Outgoing Club President, Kathy Shrader, explained two locations for a bench were under consideration; however, the Oak Point site won because it highlights South Bass Island’s historical setting.  Lisa Berens and Jody Frimel co-chaired the Bench Committee and were responsible for research and installation (with Oak Point State Park Ranger Michael Pucak).

Present at this morning’s dedication were Garden Club Founder and Past President Sally Duffy, Kathi Spayde, Middy Church, 2023 President Kathy Schrader, Dianne Smith, Bernie Hineline, Jean Hilt, Jody Frimel, Lisa Berens, Luella Kacirek, 2024 President Sheri Murphy, Past President Barb Hunter, Joan Booker.

Located on South Bass Island, Oak Point State Park is just 1.5 acres in size. It offers amenities for boaters, anglers, and lake watchers, and a pleasant waterfront walk takes one to the Village of Put-in-Bay and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Restrooms and seasonal boat docks provide a respite for boaters, and a shelter-house with lake views offers a place to picnic and relax. — Ohio Department of Natural Resources
