Put-in-Bay School On Track to Open September 1 Amid Renovations

Put-in-Bay School is currently projected to open on time for students on Tuesday, September 1, as renovations to the school’s historic 1919 building continue.

Principal Scott Mangas provided the update in the school’s latest monthly newsletter, saying significant progress has been made throughout the summer and classrooms and learning spaces are beginning to take shape.

“Most importantly, we are currently projected to open school on time for students on Tuesday, September 1st,” Mangas wrote.

Contractors, architects, school staff and others have worked throughout the summer to keep the major renovation project moving forward.

While students and staff are expected to return to the building for the start of the 2026–2027 school year, some finishing touches and smaller projects will continue throughout the year. The renovation was planned as a two-year project, with additional work scheduled for next summer.

The goal of the project is to preserve the history and character of Put-in-Bay School while creating modern, comfortable and efficient learning spaces for students and staff.

The school is also planning a community open house this fall so residents can see the improvements firsthand. A date and time will be announced later.

Mangas thanked school staff for their flexibility during an unusual summer that included moving out of classrooms during construction and preparing those spaces again for the return of students. He also recognized the support of parents, families, the Put-in-Bay Board of Education and the broader island community.

Put-in-Bay School will begin the 2026–2027 school year with academics, athletics, activities, field trips and other programs returning alongside the continuing renovation work.
