Fog Be Gone!

One last look at the day’s fog over Put-in-Bay Harbor before Thursday’s forecast: “Showers have moved out of the area and some spots are seeing clear skies this evening. Temperatures have begun to drop into the 30s across the western counties; the next round of precipitation expected Thursday afternoon.”  NWS Cleveland OH  921 PM EST Wed Jan 4 2023

Rescue Marine Delivers Stranded Islanders

Jake Dunfee, who operates Rescue Marine out of Marblehead, Ohio, comes to the rescue of islanders stranded on the mainland due to the incessant fog enveloping the Bass Islands.

While sunshine starts to meander its way through the seascape this afternoon, only a few flights from Port Clinton to the islands succeed in delivering residents and workers.  Thus, yesterday and today, Mr. Dunfee and crewman Dustin braved the limited visibility to provide transport.  The one-way fee from Miller Boat Line’s Catawba Dock is $100.  The National Weather Service dense fog advisory is in place until 4pm today.

Kate Ostapchuk, a seasonal worker at the Park Hotel and Cameo Pizza who decided to spend the winter on South Bass Island, was pleased to return with Rescue Marine Captain Jake after a visit to Chicago.  Her photos are below:

The Foggy Island
By Amanda Downey

Oh fog, how you remind me of a perfect dreamy day–Your beauty and mystical display.
The warm and moist air across the lake;
How hidden the monument this makes.

Canada Geese fly in, one barely sees them land.  Even by the beach, you almost can make out the sand.

The reflections of the ferries as a seagull’s echo flies by; Not a sign of an ice shanty or even the sky.

So secret is the Lime Kiln Dock,
And down at The Benson you can hardly see the locks.
Onward to the ramp, you now take a seat:

To hope the fog will lift, but oh how magical, how neat.

Fog Shuts Down Put-in-Bay Flights

Incredibly dense fog cancels flights to Put-in-Bay, Middle Bass, and Kelleys Island once again.  An urgent marine weather message issued at 10:19am today states, “DENSE FOG ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY.  Dense fog will reduce visibility to one nautical mile or less on nearshore and open waters of Lake Erie from Maumee Bay to Conneaut, Ohio.”

Put-in-Bay School, while open, reports several staff members remain stranded on the mainland.  South Bass mail delivery has been interrupted for three days thus far.  However, the post office continues with normal operating hours. Around Put-in-Bay, all seems to slumber.

Oh say, can you see the Monument today?
